Two longtime Lake Forest public works staff members are set to retire

June 9, 2025 by Chicago Tribune

With two longtime Lake Forest senior staff members set to retire, the city is promoting from within its ranks to fill the vacancies.

Both Public Works Superintendent Daniel Martin and Superintendent of Parks and Forestry Chuck Myers have announced their respective retirements effective June 13. Matt Brugioni, currently the streets supervisor, has been tabbed to replace Martin. Meanwhile City Forester Corey Wierema will move into Myers’s role.

Martin has worked for the city for over 30 years and has served as public works superintendent since 2011. Myers is a 14-year veteran of Lake Forest government. Both received resolutions of appreciation at the June 2 City Council meeting, and they spoke fondly of their time working for the city.

Lake Forest officials praised their efforts.

“I worked with them for many, many years,” Public Works Director Michael Thomas said.  “They are the foundation of why the department is so strong today.”

Thomas also mentioned the promotions of Brugioni, who has worked for the city for 14 years, and Wierema who has been with Lake Forest for 27 years.

“With these two guys, we get ownership,” Thomas said. “That’s quite frankly exactly what we want in management. It really is to take a look and see if there are things we could do better and ask ourselves if there are, let’s do it.”
