The Mets Should Look To Trade Mark Vientos

January 10, 2026 by Last Word On Baseball

With the rise of Brett Baty last season, it may be time for the Mets to move on from Mark Vientos.

The Mets Should Look To Move Mark Vientos This Upcoming Season

Vientos had a magical 2024 season. He hit 27 homers, had 71 RBIs, and hit .266 that year. The Mets had a storybook run to the postseason that ended in the NLCS. While they went on that run, Vientos hit .327 in the postseason with 5 homers and 14 RBIs. He had one heck of a season, but sadly, it looks to have been a fluke for him.

Last season in 121 games, Vientos hit 17 homers with a .233 average. Vientos not only had a down year, but his defense has been awful as well. With how well Baty has improved at third defensively and how good his bat was last year, the Mets should move on from Vientos.

Mark Vientos Is An Odd Man Out On This Roster

There are really no spots on this roster for Vientos to play, as he is not a versatile player. Third base is taken up by Brett Baty, most likely being the everyday third baseman. Jorge Polanco will man first base this season for the Mets, and it remains to be seen if the Mets have trust in Vientos as their everyday DH due to his down year last season. If they do keep Vientos and he doesn’t produce, that will probably kick him out of the lineup for good. He might end up getting lost in the shuffle, especially if he does not get off to a hot start this season.

What Can The Mets Get For Mark Vientos?

It will be interesting to see whether or not the Mets move on from Vientos sometime this season. The best time for them to move him would probably be closer to the trade deadline. The Mets should wait and see what type of value Vientos has and if he can improve his value by the deadline in this 2026 season. Depending on whether they are buyers or sellers, they can either look to move him in a package for a big-name star, or they can look to move on from him and try to get some guys for the future out of him.

Will David Stearns Pull The Trigger If The Right Deal Comes Up?

This all comes down to whether or not David Stearns sees a deal he likes that involves Vientos. With the Mets having some solid prospects down on the farm and Baty looking like he is overtaking Vientos’s duties at third, it seems as if this could be his last season as a Met. This is probably Vientos’s last chance to show 2024 was not a fluke. If Baty goes off and has another solid year like last season, the Mets might be saying bye-bye to Vientos. It will be interesting to see if Vientos lasts another season as a Met or the Mets look to move on from him in this 2026 campaign.
