A complete numerical list of this year’s Cubs as they get ready for this year’s Spring Training.
As I do here every spring, today I present to you a full numerical roster of all the players and coaches in Cubs spring camp. Also included are the Cubs’ retired numbers, so you can see the full numerical progression. There are 60 players in camp, the 40-man roster plus 20 non-roster invitees.
A few notes:
- The Cubs have still not re-issued No. 44, worn by Anthony Rizzo during the World Series run, since he was traded away in 2021. I’m guessing that will remain un-issued at least until Rizzo retires. Jon Lester’s (and Kerry Wood’s) No. 34 has also not been re-issued since Lester left after 2020, and neither has David Ross’ No. 3. None of these numbers are likely to be retired by the team. Other numbers not in use this spring: 1, 12, 20, 21, 28, 58, 59, 62, 64, 69, 73, 82, 96, 98 and 99.
- Third base coach Quintin Berry was originally going to wear No. 55, but Ryan Pressly, who wore that number in Houston, claimed it. So Berry will switch to No. 0, becoming the first Cubs coach to wear that number.
- Joe Maddon’s No. 70 has been issued to Cade Horton this spring, the first time anyone has worn it since Maddon’s departure after 2019. Personally, I would hope the Cubs consider retiring No. 70 for Maddon, as the manager who finally broke the World Series drought, especially if he eventually is selected to be in the Hall of Fame. Even with only five years managing the Cubs, Maddon is fifth on the all-time franchise wins list with 471, and his winning percentage of .581 is second only to Frank Chance (.624) among all Cubs managers in the Modern Era.
- Manager Craig Counsell has given up his traditional No. 30 to Kyle Tucker. Counsell will switch to No. 11. He will become the first Cubs manager to wear that number. At last month’s Cubs Convention, Counsell said that Jim Leyland, who managed Counsell with the 1997 World Series champion Marlins, wore No. 11, so he picked the number in tribute to Leyland.
- Of the 60 players listed here, 27 were not in the Cubs organization a year ago.
Lastly, I’d like to take a moment for a bit of self-promotion, if you’ll indulge me. If you still don’t have the latest edition of “Cubs By The Numbers” (complete through 2015 but still full of fun stories!), here’s your link to buy one!
