CHICAGO — Sammy Sosa is expected to make his return to Wrigley Field Friday afternoon after he reconciled with the club this winter, according to a report from Bob Nightengale.
It’s unknown if he will be honored on the field.
Sosa, 56, released a statement in December saying he “made mistakes and I apologize.”
The team invited Sosa to the Cubs Convention which he attended.
“I think that today was a perfect day,” Sosa said after the event.
He infamously left his last game with the Cubs early in September 2004 and never even dressed in uniform. He was fined and traded to the Orioles that offseason.
Sosa is the Cubs’ all-time home run leader with 545 of his 609 career home runs being hit for the North Siders. Like several players in the steroid era, he has been iced out of the Hall of Fame so far.
The 56-year-old became a Cub ahead of the 1992 season after he was traded by the White Sox for George Bell. He became an all-star for the first time in 1995.
He revitalized the sport, along with Mark McGwire, in 1998 by hitting .308 with 66 home runs and 158 RBIs.
The Cubs look to get back in the win column with Sosa in attendance Friday at 1:20 p.m. against the Mariners.
