The trade deadline is now ten days away, and the Cubs have major decisions to make. They are confirmed buyers and are rumored to go all in. First reported by Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic, the Cubs have expressed interest in Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez and Nationals RHP Kyle Finnegan. Suárez would be a major get for Chicago, but he will not be cheap.
Report: Cubs Interested in Eugenio Suárez and Kyle Finnegan
The Cubs are reportedly targeting starting pitching, relief pitching, and a third baseman at the deadline. Both of these names fit in those categories. Suárez is having a monster year so far, which includes a .929 OPS and 35 home runs. He is also currently first in the MLB in RBIs with eighty-five and was recently selected to and played in his second career all-star game. Suarez would be a major step up at third base compared to the Cubs’ current situation. Matt Shaw has been their starter at the hot corner for the majority of the year, but he has struggled mightily recently. In his last thirty games, he is slashing .154/.225/.220 in 91 at-bats. If the Cubs were able to get Suárez for a decent price, this would fill the biggest hole in the field for them.
Kyle Finnegan falls into the category of relief pitching when it comes to the Cubs’ targets. Finnegan has had an interesting year, holding a 4.25 ERA with 29 strikeouts in 36 innings. He is not a pitcher who will deliver a ton of strikeouts, but he will induce a good amount of ground balls. Finnegan features mainly a 4-seam fastball and a splitter with the occasional slider. The Cubs’ current bullpen has been rock-solid for most of the year and boasts a 3.60 ERA, which ranks seventh in the Majors. While another reliever may not be their biggest need, another strong arm in the bullpen can only help.
