Orioles Place Third Catcher on Injured List, Call Up Jacob Stallings

July 2, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The Baltimore Orioles selected the contract of veteran catcher Jacob Stallings from Triple-A Norfolk on Monday after third-string catcher Chadwick Tromp landed on the injured list.

Three of the team’s catchers landed on the list in the last two weeks, with all-star Adley Rutschman suffering a left-oblique strain. Backup catcher Maverick Handley suffered a concussion after a collision at the plate only one day after Rutschman’s placement on the injured list. The team signed Stallings the next day following Handley’s injury.

The veteran catcher’s promotion accompanies the recall of outfielder Dylan Carlson from Triple-A and the release of infielder Emmanuel Rivera. The Colorado Rockies signed Stallings in the offseason to a one-year, $2.5 million contract.

Stallings’ Current Value

Jacob Stallings will likely be on the team until one of the three injured catchers is ready to return. The 35-year-old hit a forgettable .143/.217/.396 slash line with 31 strikeouts in 84 at-bats in 2025. He also walked only five times and had three doubles with no home runs and six RBIs.

His numbers are a stark dip from his 2024 season with the Rockies, where he hit .263/.357/.810 with nine home runs and 36 RBI. In addition, Stallings struck out only 65 times in 243 at-bats that season, a 33% difference between his strikeout rate in 2024 and 2025.

As previously mentioned, Stallings’ metrics rank either near the lowest or at the lowest levels in the major leagues. His defense is also below average, no longer displaying his Gold Glove defense seen in 2021.

What is Going On with the Orioles’ Health?

A number of impact players for the Orioles remain on the injured list, either far from a return or without a timetable. Shortstop Jorge Mateo was pulled from a June 30 rehab outing, and pitcher Cade Povich suffered a similar issue in the same game, per ESPN. First baseman Ryan Mountcastle also currently finds himself on the 60-day injured list.

In addition, most of the Orioles’ starting rotation also finds themselves on the 60-day injured list, including right-handers Grayson Rodriguez, Kyle Bradish, and Tyler Wells. Right-hander Zach Eflin also landed on the list with back tightness.

At least 15 players are on the injured list or suffering from day-to-day issues as of July 1, per MLB. Outfielder Cedric Mullins and infielder Jordan Westburg recently returned from injury. Colton Cowser also suffered a thumb injury earlier in the season.
