Strap in for a winter reading adventure with Naperville Public Library’s 30-Day Winter Reading Challenge. From Dec. 15 to Jan. 31, children and teens can go for the gold with this year’s program, “Ride Into Reading!”
The slopes (and stories) are calling.
The Winter Reading Challenge is open to all readers from birth through grade 12, even if they don’t have a library card. The goal of the 30-Day Winter Reading Challenge is to read a little bit every day for a total of 30 days. The days don’t have to be in a row, and participants get to decide how they want to read. Maybe it’s one book a day, a few pages before bed or listening to a story as a family. All types of reading counts!
Why read every day? Practice makes perfect! Reading every day is a great way to build a healthy habit that helps young minds to grow stronger, smarter and more curious. Studies have shown that reading improves vocabulary, boosts imagination, strengthens focus, and builds confidence in writing and speaking.
Ready, set, read!
Participants can register online at Naperville-lib.org/winter or at any Naperville Public Library location. Children will receive a Winter Reading Kit with their reading log and Level 1 and 2 prizes. Each day a child reads, they can fill in one of the spaces on their reading log. Once they’ve completed 10 days, they have completed a reading level and can pick out a prize. Once they have completed their third and final level, they can skate over to the library to pick up their Level 3 prize: a brand-new book to keep!
Teens can pick up their Level 1, 2 and 3 prizes at the Adult and Teen Services Desks at any Naperville Public Library location. Anyone who completes the 30-day Winter Reading Challenge will also be entered into our grand prize drawing.
For even more winter fun, visit us at the library all winter long for special storytimes and programs. Children can join the hunt for our Winter Reading mascot, Yeti. Activities will change weekly so be sure to stop by all winter long. Let the games begin, and happy reading!
