The Smokies blow a big lead and then win on a walk-off wild pitch. Iowa gets shelled. The Pelicans stop Columbia.

Right-hander Spencer Turnbull joined the Iowa Cubs. Right-hander Tommy Romero went on the Development List.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were swarmed by the Louisville Bats (Reds), 8-4.

The Iowa debut of Spencer Turnbull could have gone better. Turnbull took the loss after getting rocked for six runs on nine hits over just three innings. Two of those nine hits were home runs. Turnbull struck out three, walked one and hit one batter.

Connor Noland pitched four scoreless innings of relief, giving up just two hits. He walked two and struck out one.

Right fielder Greg Allen hit a solo home run in the third inning. It was his sixth this year. Allen went 2 for 5.

Neither Owen Caissie, Jonathon Long nor Kevin Alcántara played in this game. Read into that what you will.

Knoxville Smokies

The Knoxville Smokies speared the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Marlins), 6-5.

Antonio Santos kept the Blue Wahoos scoreless over the first four innings on just one hit. He did struggle with control as he walked four while striking out three.

The Smokies bullpen blew a 5-0 lead (Chase Watkins one run, AJ Puckett three runs and Mitchell Tyranski one unearned run) but Brad Deppermann pitched a clean top of the ninth and got the win when the Smokies walked it off in the bottom of the ninth. Deppermann struck out one.

First baseman BJ Murray Jr. singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth. He then stole second base, stole third base and scored the winning run on a walk-off wild pitch. Murray was 1 for 4 with a walk and three steals.

Shortstop Jefferson Rojas hit a three-run double in the third inning. Rojas went 1 for 2 with two walks and he was hit by a pitch. Rojas stole two bases. He scored twice and had the three runs batted in.

Third baseman Pedro Ramirez went 2 for 4 with a walk and an RBI.

Second baseman Reivaj Garcia was 2 for 4 with a stolen base and one run batted in. Garcia was intentionally walked in the ninth.

Catcher Ethan Hearn went 2 for 3 with a walk and one run scored.

South Bend Cubs

They played three innings in Dayton before the game was cancelled because of rain. It will not be completed or made up as South Bend does not play Dayton again this year. Drew Bowser got cheated out of a grand slam and Yenrri Rojas and Luis Rujano had a three-inning no-hitter washed away.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were lights out against the Columbia Fireflies (Royals), 5-1.

Alfredo Romero pitched the first four innings without allowing a run. He gave up two hits, issued one walk and struck out two.

Luis Martinez-Gomez got the win because Romero didn’t go five inning. Martinez-Gomez pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. He walked one and struck out one.

DH Alexey Lumpuy came a double shy of the cycle, going 3 for 4 with a triple and a two-run home run in the seventh inning. It was his seventh home run this year. Lumpuy had three total RBI and scored twice. He also stole a base.

Center fielder Christian Olivo was 2 for 3 with a steal. Olivo scored on Lumpuy’s home run.

Left fielder Jose Escobar was 2 for 4.
