Iowa splits a doubleheader. The Pelicans win in extras. Everyone else got rain.

Infielder Eriandys Ramon got promoted to Double-A Knoxville from Low-A Myrtle Beach.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs split a doubleheader with the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals), winning game one 5-3 and losing the nightcap 9-5

Jake Woodford started game one in his Cubs debut. Woodford gave up three runs on five hits over 4.2 innings. He walked one and struck out four.

Riley Martin pitched the next 1.1 innings and got the win because Woodford came an out short of going five innings. Martin pitched 1.1 innings and surrendered just one hit and no runs. Martin struck out four and walked no one.

Jack Neely pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh for this save. Neely struck out one.

Iowa scored all five runs in the second inning when six of the first seven batters of the inning had hits and the other one had a sacrifice fly.

Second baseman Chase Strumpf was 2 for 3 with a two-run double in the second inning. Strumpf scored once.

DH Moisés Ballesteros went 2 for 4 with an RBI single.

Center fielder Christian Franklin went 1 for 3 with an RBI triple and a walk. Franklin scored once.

Tommy Romero started game two and took the loss after he was battered for eight runs on five hits over just 3+ innings. Romero left the game after the first five batters of the fourth inning reached against him. All would come around to score. Romero walked four and struck out four.

Second baseman Chase Strumpf hit a solo home run in the second inning, his ninth on the season. Strumpf was 1 for 2 with a walk in game two.

Right fielder Owen Caissie went 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. Caissie scored one run.

Catcher Moisés Ballesteros was 2 for 4 with a double. He had one RBI and scored one run.

Knoxville Smokies

Rained out. Doubleheader tomorrow (Saturday)

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were losing to the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), 2-1 when the rains came. They’ll finish the game tomorrow and then play the regularly-scheduled game afterwards.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans defused the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (White Sox), 5-3 in ten innings.

Alfredo Romero started and pitched five innings, allowing just one run on four hits. Romero walked two and struck out six.

Cole Reynolds threw the next 3+ innings and gave up just one run on one hit, one walk and one hit batter. He struck out four.

Jackson Kirkpatrick relieved Reynolds in the bottom of the ninth after Reynolds allowed a leadoff single. Kirkpatrick allowed that inherited runner to score to blow the save and send the game to extras. But Kirkpatrick went on to get the win after the Pelicans scored three runs in the top of the tenth. Kirkpatrick allowed one unearned run on one hit over two innings. He struck out five and walked one.

First baseman Cameron Sisneros was activated off the injured list today and he celebrated by hitting a three-run home run in the top of the tenth. It was his second home run of the year. Sisneros went 3 for 5 with a double and the home run. He scored three runs.

Third baseman Matt Halbach went 1 for 2 with three walks.

Here’s an RBI single by second baseman Ty Southisene. He was 1 for 4 with a walk.

And here’s the Sisneros home run. The right fielder didn’t move on this one. Or if he did, it was just to admire the view.
