Minor League Wrap: BJ Murray Jr grand slam leads Knoxville past Lookouts 4-2

Three wins and a rainout tonight

The Cubs released Iowa outfielder Greg Allen.

Outfielder Darius Hill returns to Triple-A Iowa from Double-A Knoxville.

Infielder Reivaj Garcia in promoted to Knoxville from High-A South Bend.

Iowa Cubs

Rained out in Omaha. They’ll play a doubleheader starting tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies blinded the Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds), 4-2.

Starter Jaxon Wiggins held the Lookouts scoreless through six innings, but got in trouble as he came out to pitch the seventh. Wiggins’ final line was two runs on three hits over 6.1 innings. Wiggins walked one and struck out four.

Brad Deppermann took over for Wiggins and got the win. He pitched 1.2 innings and retired all five batters he faced, although the first one hit a sacrifice fly. Deppermann struck out one.

A.J. Puckett pitched the ninth and got his ninth save. Puckett gave up a two-out single, but nothing else. He struck out one.

All four of the Smokies runs came on a eighth-inning grand slam by DH BJ Murray Jr. It was Murray’s tenth home run of the year. Murray was 2 for 4.

Second baseman Reivaj Garcia went 2 for 3 in his first game for the Smokies this year. He scored on Murray’s slam.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs decoyed the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), 11-3.

Brooks Caple went seven innings and allowed three runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out five. It was Caple’s first career High-A win.

Center fielder Carter Trice hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, his fourth on the year. Trice went 2 for 5.

Shortstop Cristian Hernandez had a big game, going 4 for 5 with a two-run double and a stolen base. Hernandez scored three times.

DH Edgar Alvarez went 4 for 5 with a stolen base. He had three RBI singles for three total runs batted in. Alvarez scored twice.

Left fielder Andy Garriola was 2 for 5 with three RBI and one run scored.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans defused the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (White Sox), 5-1.

Yenrri Rojas pitched the first five innings and got the win with five scoreless innings. Rojas allowed three hits and issued three walks. He struck out five.

First baseman Matt Halbach hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his second on the season. Halbach went 2 for 4.

Right fielder Alexey Lumpuy chipped in insurance run with a solo home run in the seventh inning. It was his fourth this year. Lumpuy was 1 for 2 with a walk and a stolen base. He had two runs scored.

Second baseman Ty Southisene was 3 for 4 with two steals.

Shortstop Yahil Melendez went 2 for 4.
