A Lombard man was denied pre-trial release after allegedly battering multiple DuPage County Sheriff’s deputies, sending three to the hospital, at the DuPage County Courthouse Friday morning.
Avinash Panjwani, 27, is charged with five counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, one count of aggravated battery – great bodily harm and two counts of resisting a police officer causing injury.
Panjwani was at the DuPage County Courthouse attending a previously scheduled court date Friday, and was ordered to report to probation to complete a drug testing. According to officials, he made a shadow boxing gesture to a courtroom deputy.
As he was leaving the court room, Panjwani allegedly shoulder-checked a different courtroom deputy. He returned to the courtroom approximately 20 minutes later, and left the courtroom again without permission shortly after.
Panjwani was approached by a deputy who informed him that he was not allowed to leave the courtroom.
According to officials, Panjwani punched one deputy in the face twice, knocking him into an elevator. It is alleged that Panjwani then got on top of the deputy, placed his hands on the deputy’s head and pushed his thumbs into his eyes forcefully.
When other officers came to remove Panjwani, he allegedly attempted to bite and pushed one of the deputies into the elevator, injuring him. He also allegedly spat twice on a different deputy and kneed another.
Panjwani was taken into custody and transported to the DuPage County Jail.
His next court appearance is scheduled for October 6.
