Petra van Nuis, Andy Brown Quartet to perform at library
Petra van Nuis and the Andy Brown Quartet will perform a free concert from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.
Swing-era music, Great American Songbook standards and Brazilian bossa nova will be featured, according to the library’s website. Brown and van Nuis are married, and have been performing around the Chicago area since 2003, a news release said.

Former Carpentersville village president dead at age 68
Former Carpentersville Village President Mark Boettger, 68, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, at his Carpentersville home after a short battle with cancer.
Boettger served as village president from 2001 to 2005, and prior to that was a village trustee from 1992 to 1999.
Before retirement, Boettger was employed by Mitutoyo Tool and Industrial Supply Co., where he was a field service manager, according to his obituary.
Born in Chicago, Boettger spent most of his life in the Carpentersville area, graduating from Dundee Community High School in 1975. He was a longtime member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Dundee.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Diana Hinojosa, as well as a son and daughter and three grandsons.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 25, at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. Interment will be private. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the funeral service begins.
Tribute to Tony Bennett being presented at Blizzard Theatre
The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra will celebrate the life and music of singer Tony Bennett with a concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, in Elgin Community College’s Blizzard Theatre.
The 18-piece big band is led by Jeremy Davis and Clay Johnson. Their ensemble infuses Bennett’s classics with southern charm and a contemporary flair, according to the ECC website, blending jazz, swing and storytelling.

Elgin-area in line for $12 million in road project funding
More than $12 million in Illinois Department of Transportation Rebuild Illinois money for 2026 construction and road improvement projects has been secured for the Elgin, Carpentersville and East Dundee areas, according to state Sen. Cristina Castro, D-Elgin.
Projects for 2026 include:
- $1 million for land acquisition along Lake Street in Elgin west of Randall Road to east of Shales Parkway;
- $135,000 for signal timing progression along Route 25 in Carpentersville from Helm Road to Longmeadow Parkway;
- $425,000 for traffic signal installation, timing and progression in Carpentersville and East Dundee from Golfview Lane to Route 72;
- $720,000 for the second phase of engineering for the Chicago Street bridge in Elgin;
- $1.233 million for the second phase of engineering for the Kimball Street bridge in Elgin;
- $5.1 million for reconstruction of L.W. Besinger Drive in Carpentersville from Lake Marian Road to Route 25;
- $340,000 for engineering the L.W. Besinger reconstruction project;
- $3.1 million for reconstruction of Villa Avenue from Gifford Street to Chicago Street and Center Street/Dundee Avenue from Chicago Street to Summit Street, both in Elgin.
