The Los Angeles Dodgers are calling up one-time closer Alexis Diaz as their current closer Tanner Scott is headed to the Injured List, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. There has been no official roster move as yet, but after Scott left last night’s game in the ninth inning with a “sting “in his forearm, a trip to the IL is “most likely according to Manager Dave Roberts. The All-Star closer underwent an MRI but the results haven’t been announced. Roberts said they remain “hopeful” that Scott will return this season.

Adding Injury to Insult
Tanner Scott was one of the most coveted relief pitchers on the market this past offseason. He sported a 1.72 Earned Run Average in 2024. Going against the grain, the Dodgers signed Scott to a four-year contract worth 72 million dollars. Unfortunately, the All-Star closer has been unable to produce last year’s effective results. He has blown seven saves, the most in baseball. He also features a 4.14 ERA, which means his filthy repertoire has not been effective due to a lack of control. It remains to be seen whether Scott’s physical health may have led to disappointing results on the field.
Not Quite A Closer in Waiting
Alexis Diaz has been an All-Star closer for the Cincinnati Reds. However, lack of control has relegated him to the minors in recent months. The Dodgers acquired earlier this year in hopes of bolstering their right-handed options out of the bullpen. Diaz was called up earlier this year but has yet to appear in a major league game. His line at Triple-A Oklahoma City indicates that he is still a work in progress. He has a hefty 6.75 ERA with more walks than strikeouts.
Reportedly, the Dodgers are in the market for relievers as the Trade deadline approaches. Tanner Scott’s injury may add a sense of urgency to their efforts.
