Tom Cosgrove was optioned back to Triple-A Iowa when Cade Horton was called up for Saturday’s start.
Now, Thielbar is back and Gavin Hollowell, who threw twice in the series against the Mets, has been returned to Iowa. Overall Hollowell has a 1.42 ERA and 1.263 WHIP in five appearances for the Cubs this season covering 6⅓ innings.
Optioning Hollowell back and forth between Chicago and Des Moines is something the Cubs will have to watch carefully. This makes two recalls and returns to Iowa for Hollowell, and per the latest CBA, players can be optioned a total of five times in any one season before they have to be exposed to waivers.
Thielbar has pitched in 16 games for the Cubs this year covering 13⅔ innings and overall has a 3.29 ERA and 1.098 WHIP. He hasn’t allowed a home run this season and has allowed only one run in his last nine appearances.
