The Cubs open a brief three-game homestand.
Today’s roster move: Here
Monday notes…
- MILESTONES APPROACHING: If the Cubs hit a home run against the Giants during the next three days, it will be their 7,000th at Wrigley Field against National League opponents. If they hit a second homer, it will be their 7,500th at home against all opponents since 1901, first year of the Modern Era. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- FINALLY, A STEAL: Kyle Tucker’s stolen base in the ninth inning Sunday was the Cubs’ first in their last eight games, the most recent before that coming April 25 against the Phillies, when they had four. Even with seven games without a steal, the Cubs still lead MLB with 45 stolen bases (Red Sox are second with 43). The Cubs have been caught stealing seven times for a success rate of 86.5 percent.
- WHAT A RELIEF: Daniel Palencia, last five games since April 23: 0.00 ERA, 0.600 WHIP over five innings, struck out six of 18 batters faced.
- WHAT A RELIEF, PART 2: Drew Pomeranz has not allowed a hit to any of the 15 batters he has faced since joining the Cubs, and only two baserunners (two walks). He has struck out four in four appearances covering 4⅓ innings.
Here are today’s particulars.

Matthew Boyd has made six mostly-good starts for the Cubs and has gone at least five innings in each of them and six innings three times, which is also good.
This is his first-ever start against the Giants, and only three current Giants (Willy Adames, Matt Chapman and Wilmer Flores) have ever faced him, and those three are a total 3-for-18 against Boyd with seven strikeouts.
So perhaps this will be a good night for Boyd.
Landen Roupp debuted with the Giants last year, mostly as a reliever (four starts in 23 appearances). He did not face the Cubs in 2024, so like Boyd, this is his first-ever game against tonight’s opponent.
Roupp has had a couple of good starts but overall he’s been hit pretty hard with a 5.10 ERA and 1.633 WHIP. He also has a fairly high walk rate (10.4 percent). Hopefully patient Cubs hitters can take advantage.
