The Cubs go for the series win.

Sunday notes…

  • CUBS/METS SERIES: This is 11th series since 2000 between the Cubs and Mets at New York in which the teams have split the first two games. The Cubs have won the third game in four of the previous 10, including last year, when they lost a fourth game to split the series. They had done the same in 2008. The Cubs won the finale of three-game series in 2003, 2004, 2011 and 2012.Only in 2011 did they lose the first game, then win the next two. Their previous such series win had been in 1993. This is their 35th series vs. the Mets at New York since then. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
  • CUBS/METS ON MOTHER’S DAY: Today’s game will be the 777th between the Cubs and Mets in the regular season. It will be only the fourth played on Mother’s Day at New York. On May 8, 1966, they split a doubleheader. The Cubs won the opener, 3-1, as Dick Ellsworth pitched seven innings and Ferguson Jenkins finished up. The Mets won the rematch, 5-1, scoring all their runs in the third inning on six hits, beginning with a leadoff homer by future Cub Jim Hickman. On May 12, 1996, the Cubs won, 3-0. Ryne Sandberg and Sammy Sosa smacked solo homers. Jim Bullinger pitched a two-hitter, with Jeff Kent singling twice. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
  • DANSBY IS STILL HOT: Dansby Swanson is on an 11-game on-base streak in which he is batting .421/.488/.789 (16-for-38) with two doubles, four home runs, five walks and 11 runs scored.
  • THE NEW CLOSER?: Porter Hodge, last eight games since April 20: 7⅓ innings, 0.00 ERA (one unearned run), 0.818 WHIP, two saves.

Here are today’s particulars.

Matthew Boyd’s last outing, Monday vs. the Giants, was a good one: Six innings, two runs, no walks, seven strikeouts. He’s generally been around that good all year.

He has faced the Mets only once, and that was nine years ago, so largely irrelevant to today. It’s his first-ever start at Citi Field. There is one Met who faced him quite a bit when both players were in the AL Central, Francisco Lindor. Lindor is 12-for-33 against Boyd (.364) with three doubles and two home runs.

Must be something about getting out of Anaheim. Griffin Canning spent five years with the Angels and posted a 4.78 ERA in 99 games (94 starts).

He’s off to a great start with the Mets, 2.50 ERA and 1.389 WHIP, and leads the NL with five wins, for whatver individual pitcher wins are worth these days.

Against the Cubs last year, July 5 at Wrigley Field, he allowed six hits, two walks and four runs in 4⅓ innings, including a home run by Seiya Suzuki.
