The Cubs look to even up their series in Detroit.
DETROIT — Saturday notes…
- ALMOST FAMOUS: The Cubs had a chance Friday night to tie their record for the earliest date on which they won their 40th game. They were 40-16 after winning on June 6, 2016. A 40th win today will come on the second earliest date. The Cubs were 40-24 after winning on June 8, 2008. Their next-earliest date was on June 16, 2001, when they became 40-25. For many years, the season did not begin until mid-April. In 1907, the Cubs were 40-11 after winning on June 18. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- THAT OTHER LEAGUE: The Cubs are 8-2 vs. American League teams so far this year. The .800 winning percentage in interleague play is the best in MLB. The Cubs are slashing .306/.384/.496 (110-for-359) vs. AL teams and are averaging 8.1 runs per game vs. American League clubs so far this season.
- KING TUCK: Kyle Tucker, last five games since May 31: .429/.556/.549 (6-for-14) with four doubles.
- PCA HEATING UP: Pete Crow-Armstrong, last five games since June 1: .350/.409/.550 (7-for-20) with a double, a home run, six runs scored and four stolen bases.
Here are today’s particulars.

Jameson Taillon, RHP vs. Tyler Holton, LHP

After a bit of a rough patch, Jameson Taillon has now put together four straight good starts, totaling 25⅔ innings in which he has a 2.65 ERA and 0.740 WHIP, with just four walks in that time frame.
Last year, Taillon allowed the Tigers four runs in five innings Aug. 21 at Wrigley Field. Here’s hoping for something better than that today. For whatever it’s worth, Taillon has a much worse ERA on the road this year (six starts, 4.96 ERA) than at home (six starts, 2.70 ERA). But he also has a much better ERA in day games (four starts, 2.28 ERA) than night games (eight starts, 4.53 ERA), so … maybe pitching this afternoon will help.
Tyler Holton will be an opener this afternoon, presumably because one of the Cubs’ first three hitters (Kyle Tucker) is lefthanded and Ian Happ, who generally leads off, has less power vs. RHP (though Happ has a better OPS, .756, vs. LHP, than his .699 vs. RHP). We shall see if that works. He is likely opening for Keider Montero, who has a scoreless streak going covering his last 9⅔ innings, in which he’s allowed eight hits and three walks. This will be his first-ever appearance against the Cubs.
That’s about all I’ve got here. Hopefully the Cubs will find Montero someone they can hit.
