The Cubs look to sweep the visitors from Colorado.
Wednesday notes…
- WRIGLEY STREAKS: Tuesday night’s win was the Cubs’ eighth straight at home against the Rockies, going back to Sept. 22, 2023. A win tonight will tie their record in the rivalry of nine straight at Wrigley Field from Oct. 1, 2006, through April 13, 2009. Nine games is the Cubs’ longest home streak against any expansion team. They won nine vs. the Mets in 1983-84.Their high also is nine vs. the Pirates, all in 1913, and the Cardinals, all in 1918. Their longest against any team was 19 vs. the Braves in 1921-23. They won 17 in a row vs. both the Braves and Dodgers in 1935-36. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- STEALING BASES: The Cubs stole six bases Tuesday night, matching their season high, set May 17 against the White Sox. They had six steals in three games last year, the first in which they had multiple six-steal games since 1985. And 1985 was the first season with a pair of such games since 1914. They swiped at least six bases in six games in 1907, in five games in 1905 and 1911, in four games in 1903 and 1906, and in three games in 1902 and 1904, as well as 1985. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- THE MONTHLY RECORD: After going 3-4 in March, the Cubs were 15-9 in April and are 16-8 so far in May, with three games remaining this month, so if they can win those three, they’d have 19 wins in May. The last time a Cubs team won 19 games in May was 2021, when they went 19-8, and before that: 1977, a franchise record-tying 21 wins in May (also 1903).

Matthew Boyd had allowed no more than three runs in any of his first nine starts for the Cubs. Welp. That went away last Friday against the Reds, where he allowed four runs in four innings, gutting it out after a rough first inning.
Interesting for a guy with 192 MLB games (178 starts), this will be his first-ever game against the Rockies. A couple of current Rockies have a handful of at-bats against him, 5-for-12 overall.
I look for Boyd to bounce back from last Friday’s start.
Tanner Gordon made eight starts for the Rockies last year with an ERA approaching 9. He’s cut that in half in two starts so far this year, 4.38. He was originally in the Braves organization, drafted out of Indiana University, and came to the Rockies last summer for Pierce Johnson. He’s a native of downstate Champaign.
He has, as you can imagine, never faced the Cubs or anyone on their active roster. So we’ll see.
