The White Sox have added a potential bullpen arm, signing right-hander Lucas Sims to a minor league deal. The agreement comes with a non-roster invite to Spring Training, adding to the 22 players announced yesterday.
Sims, 31, has appeared with four different teams over nine major league seasons. He most recently opened 2025 with the Nationals but was released after 19 shaky appearances. Command issues plagued the right-hander over 12.1 innings, as he hit seven batters and walked the rest at a 19.4% clip. Those struggles led to his 18 earned runs surrendered and an inflated 13.86 ERA over that span. Sims later signed a minor-league deal with the Phillies in late May, but the issues persisted at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he posted an 18.6% walk rate and hit nine more batters across 34 innings.
What makes Sims’ decline a bit concerning is that it didn’t coincide with any reported injuries or noticeable drop in velocity. Still, his longer track record offers some reason for optimism. Looking back a few seasons to 2020–24, Sims was a serviceable enough bullpen arm for the Reds and Red Sox despite ongoing control issues, posting a 3.89 ERA with a 29.4% strikeout rate over 189.2 innings. The White Sox are hoping he can rediscover some version of that form over the next two months.
As it currently stands, Chicago’s bullpen features names like Seranthony Dominguez, Grant Taylor, Jordan Leasure, Mike Vasil, and Tyler Gilbert. Additional candidates include familiar arms such as Brandon Eisert, Wikelman Gonzalez, Bryan Hudson, and Jairo Iriarte. Non-roster invitees Ryan Borucki and Tyson Miller will also be competing for the remaining spots in camp.
This signing may ultimately amount to nothing or offer little more than depth, but pitching director Brian Bannister and new pitching coach Zach Bove will see whether Sims can get back on track. His command will be the key factor, and the biggest question mark, as he fights for another opportunity.
