Report: Mets Sign RHP Luke Weaver

December 17, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

It’s happened again. For the second time this offseason, David Stearns and the Mets have poached a former Yankees reliever. This time, it’s Luke Weaver.

The former Yankee closer signed a two-year, $22 million deal, first reported by Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Report: Mets Sign RHP Luke Weaver

The back end of the Mets bullpen now mirrors the Yankees’ exact blueprint. Devin Williams is now set to close and Weaver slides into the setup role. Notably, that duo did not pan out in the Bronx, as the inconsistency at closer forced the Yankees to add David Bednar at the trade deadline.

In 2025, Weaver saw a dip in production, though not one that raised major concern. The right-hander posted a 3.62 ERA across 64 innings, recording eight saves and 72 strikeouts with a 1.02 WHIP. His changeup remained a key weapon, holding opponents to a .126 batting average while being used 20% of the time. The decline has largely been attributed to a hamstring strain suffered in May, and Weaver is expected to be fully healthy for the 2026 season.

Simply put, this moves works very well for the Mets. They add another reliever with considerable upside on a short-term deal, locking him in at a $11 million AAV, a team-friendly figure. This has become a noticeable pattern for New York this offseason: short-term contracts with strong value for players who help balance a roster that was overly top-heavy the previous season.

Whether fans want to hear it or not, Stearns has put together a solid offseason through the first two months. Losing Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz isn’t the flashy route. However, there is a plan, it’s one designed to produce success sooner rather than later.
