A worker picking up debris along Interstate 65 was airlifted to a Chicago Monday afternoon after a truck hit his parked vehicle which then careened into him.
Around 2:30 p.m. Monday, Indiana State troopers responded to a crash on I-65 southbound about one mile north of 61st Avenue, according to an ISP news release.
Police said that preliminary investigation shows a white 2021 Ford F-150 pulling a utility trailer owned by Interstate Business Solutions — a contractor whose employees pick up trash and debris while wearing high-visibility orange vests — was parked on the right shoulder. A white 2006 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling in the right lane when, for unknown reasons, it left its lane and struck the parked F-150 at a high rate of speed.
The force of the impact pushed the F-150 into the worker who was standing outside of the pickup, collecting debris in the ditch, police said. The Silverado then flipped over and came to a rest in the right lane.
The woker who was struck sustained serious injuries and was flown from the scene to the University of Chicago Hospital for treatment, the release stated. The driver of the Silverado also sustained serious injuries and was transported to Franciscan Health Crown Point.
