Russell Westbrook Surpasses Jason Kidd In NBA Record Books

November 8, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Welcome a new career record holder to the NBA’s history books. Russell Westbrook recently surpassed Jason Kidd (8,725) as the career rebounding leader for all guards. The feat occurred in the Sacramento Kings’ 121-116 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Westbrook Takes Rebounding Crown In 18th Season

Westbrook has established himself as a top-tier point guard in NBA history. The guard set several records during his time with the Oklahoma City Thunder and won the MVP award in 2017. Now, he adds another legacy builder with this record.

The 36-year-old has amassed nearly 6,000 rebounds with the Thunder. He also averaged a triple-double four out of 18 seasons, with three consecutive to end his tenure in OKC. The remaining rebounds came from playing as a journeyman across six teams, including the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Denver Nuggets. He joined the Kings about a week before the 2025-26 season commenced.

With this record, Westbrook reinforces his athletic ability. While he’s not as dominant as he was in the past, he still has what it takes to stuff the stat sheet. Also, his chokehold on the record for career triple-doubles continues to grow.

Jason Kidd Forfeits Career Record Holder Status

Kidd has spent many years around the NBA, first as a player and now as a coach. As a player, he earned the first-ever and only co-Rookie of the Year Award (1994-95) and, eventually, won a championship in 2011. He immediately proved himself as a pre-eminent point guard with unreal court vision. Over a 19-year career, he boasted averages of 12.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 8.7 assists with 107 triple-doubles.

Similar to Westbrook, Kidd was an extremely talented point guard and previously held the title of “Mr. Triple-Double.” He played for four NBA teams, but most of his rebounds came during his tenure with the New Jersey Nets (now Brooklyn Nets).

This NBA record was destined to be eclipsed once a new Mr. Triple-Double stormed the league. Some NBA records are bound to be broken, like this one. Others, however, are unlikely ever to be overtaken. It will surely be difficult to surpass any positional records in the modern NBA’s positionless style of basketball.
