Weather records (from the National Weather Service, Chicago)

  • High temperature: 85 degrees (1950)
  • Low temperature: 21 degrees (1988)
  • Precipitation: 0.83 inches (1919)
  • Snowfall: 1.2 inches (2019)

1912: Medinah Temple, a rectangular building with a pair of crescent-crowned domes and Arabic influences, opened on Wabash Avenue just one year after construction of the world’s largest amphitheater built by a social organization began. Today it’s home to Bally’s Chicago Casino.

1942: Hunk Anderson and Luke Johnsos were promoted to Chicago Bears co-coaches while George Halas returned to the U.S. Navy during World War II. Their record was 23-11-2 (.676) from 1942-45.

1972: An older steel Illinois Central commuter six-car train and a more modern four-car one collided at 7:27 a.m. near 27th Street and Lake Shore Drive in a crash that killed 45 people and injured 332 others. News accounts described a scene of screaming passengers, mangled bodies and people staggering out of the wreck.

1988: With a low temperature of 21 degrees, it was the coldest running of the Chicago Marathon to date.
