Another 2005 White Sox player has a son continuing his education and baseball career at the collegiate level.

Joseph Contreras, the son of former pitcher José Contreras, has announced his commitment to Vanderbilt University. The decision was made official on Joseph’s personal social media accounts on September 15.

Joseph wrote the following in his post on Instagram:

First and foremost, I want to thank God, my family, friends, and everyone who has supported me along the way. I also want to thank all of my teammates and coaches who have pushed me to grow on and off the field. A special thank you to Coach Corbin, Coach Brown, and the entire Vanderbilt staff for believing in me and giving me this incredible opportunity. I’m beyond excited to announce my commitment to Vanderbilt University to continue my education and my baseball journey!

Known as an outstanding student, Joseph brings plenty to the mound. The class of 2026 member stands in at 6-foot-4 just like his father, and already possesses a mid-90s fastball that has topped out in the upper 90s. Given his high ceiling and significant development this year alone, Perfect Game USA gives him a 10 out of 10 rating on their scale, meaning they view him as a “Potential very high draft pick and/or elite level college prospect.”

The publication also shared the following scouting report based on his showcase:

Joseph Contreras is a 2026 RHP with a 6-4 195 lb. frame from Alpharetta, GA who attends Blessed Trinity Catholic. Outstanding athletic build, long arms and legs, looks taller on the mound, very projectable physically. Throws from a high 3/4’s arm slot with big downhill angle to the plate. Fastball topped out at 98 mph and sat in the mid-90’s, lots of weak ground ball contact against the fastball. Short breaking action on the slider, have seen the slider with more depth, also flashed a split finger change. Son of 11-year MLB pitcher Jose Contreras. High ceiling prospect. Excellent student. Named to play in the 2025 Perfect Game All-American Classic

The September commitment makes Joseph the highest-ranked right-handed pitcher in Vanderbilt’s incoming class and the second-highest rated pitcher overall, after 17th-ranked lefty Bo Holloway. The Commodores, who possess the top-ranked class in the country next year, have 10 commitments among the top 51 players. A recent article by MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo also listed Contreras as one of the top prep pitchers to watch in next year’s MLB Draft.

Joseph’s father, José, was key to the team’s success during the 2005 season and through the playoff run. The right-hander emerged as the team’s ace after being acquired the year prior, going 15–7 with a 3.61 ERA and 154 strikeouts over 32 starts, logging 204.2 innings pitched. During the postseason, Ozzie Guillen turned to him as the team’s No. 1 starter each series. In Game 5 of the ALCS, José became the fourth straight pitcher to toss a complete game, part of a historic streak that helped seal the pennant and pave the way to the franchise’s first World Series title in 88 years.

Our entire team at Sox On 35th would like to extend our best wishes to the Contreas as Joseph prepares to take the next step in his professional journey.
