Cowboys, Chiefs Could Connect On Trade After Detrimental Injury

October 18, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After an unexpected injury, the Dallas Cowboys will lose cornerback Trevon Diggs, but they’re in dire need of a replacement either way and could target Kansas City Chief Trent McDuffie. According to the breaking news, the Cowboys will lose Diggs for at least this upcoming matchup against the Commanders after suffering a surprise injury in his home that led him to go into concussion protocol. As of this posting, the cause of the injury remains unknown, but it’s safe to say that Dallas needs to revamp its secondary unit. Even though Dak Prescott, George Pickens and Javonte Williams have been explosive on offense, it can’t compensate for how the defense is performing.

With that, Jerry Jones said he’s “open” for business with the extra first-round picks. McDuffie is the type of player that Dallas should be investing in. Originally selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the former Washington product has been one of the best cornerbacks since coming into the league. After the Chiefs traded away L’Jarius Sneed, it made life easier for McDuffie to turn up the heat and be at his best.

Either way, McDuffie is in his contract year, so the Chiefs will need to act quickly to come to terms on a new deal. These three other teams could be in pursuit of the cornerback, even though it’s unlikely the Chiefs will let him go unless they get a deal they can’t turn down.

Cowboys, Chiefs Could Connect On Trent McDuffie Trade After Trevon Diggs Injury – 3 Other Potential Suitors

Possible Fits

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints aren’t a contender, but they’re rebuilding a new roster that looks promising. After trading for DeVaughn Vele and claiming Trey Palmer off waivers, the team should be in pursuit of upgrading the secondary unit. With Alontae Taylor being able to establish himself as a reliable starter alongside Kool-Aid McKinstry, it wouldn’t hurt to add some firepower in the cornerback room. This means Taylor or McKinstry will have to ride the bench or swap to the nickleback position, which has been lacking in this team either way.

McDuffie gives them a new, fresh breath of life for this roster that could be a postseason contender in the next two years if they play their cards right. They’ve already signed Justin Reid from Kansas City last offseason, so a trade for McDuffie would be a no-brainer.

Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders are in dire need of cornerback help. Despite trading for Marshon Lattimore last season, he hasn’t shown much anymore as he’s too past his prime. Trey Amos is experiencing “growing pains,” and the Commanders should trade for a game-changing player like McDuffie if they want to wake this team up. McDuffie is the perfect long-term cornerback the Commanders should target if Lattimore departs after the 2025 campaign.

Chicago Bears

However, the Chicago Bears could use some help in the secondary. With starter Jaylon Johnson out indefinitely, the Bears have yet to find a replacement. Even though most of their issues come from their pass-rush and run defense, they could use a star cornerback like McDuffie to pair with Nahshon Wright and Kyler Gordon.
