The White Sox announced on Tuesday that former catcher Marc Hill passed away on Sunday. He was 73.
Hill, nicknamed “the Booter”, was drafted by the Cardinals in the 10th round of the 1970 MLB Draft. He went on to debut with St. Louis in September 1973 and remained with the club through the following season.
After stints with the Giants (6 years) and Mariners (1 year), Hill made his way to the South Side as a spring training invitee and eventually signed as a free agent. Serving primarily as a backup to Carlton Fisk, Hill would spend the final six of his 14 major league seasons with the White Sox. He was notably a member of the 1983 American League West division championship club, and appeared in 77 games the next season as Fisk battled injuries.
By the end of his major league career, Hill finished hitting .223/.295/.317 with 34 home runs and 198 RBI over 737 games. He remained in the game after his retirement, coaching for minor league teams part of the Mariners and Pirates organizations, among other things.
