The Chicago Bears officially opened their 2025 training camp today at Halas Hall with rookies and quarterbacks reporting. The remaining veterans will report on Tuesday, and the first full-squad practice will take place the following day. Their first open practice with fan attendance will take place on Friday, July 25, so let’s try and rip through all these position previews before then.
First up, the quarterbacks…
Roster Locks
Caleb Williams has to be the happiest player on the Bears becuase heading into his sophomore season, he is working with one of the best playcallers in the NFL. Caleb was never going to reach his full potential with Matt Eberflus, but with Ben Johnson and his offense presumably (fingers crossed) in Chicago for the next decade plus, he can.
A Good Bet to Make it
The Bears didn’t sign Case Keenum to a contract with over $2 million guaranteed if he wasn’t part of their 2025 plans. Johnson apparently values an experienced veteran quarterback on his roster, and that will benefit Williams. We’ll have to wait and see if Keenum is QB2 or QB3.
In Detroit, Johnson’s offenses opened week one with just two quarterbacks on the active roster, but that may change in Chicago. Last year’s number two, Tyson Bagent, has enough decent film from preseason and his five games as a rookie to show he belongs.
The only thing that’ll prevent the Bears from carrying three quarterbacks is if some team swoops in and makes Ryan Poles an offer he can’t refuse for Bagent.
On the Bubble
Last year’s UDFA, Austin Reed, had a solid 2024 preseason, which helped him earn a spot on the practice squad all year. His odds of making the practice squad again will be hurt if Chicago carries three QBs on the 53-man roster.
