Minor League Wrap: Smokies stop Shuckers, 4-3

Wins for the Smokies and Pelicans tonight.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were muffled by the Nashville Sounds (Brewers), 7-4.

Connor Noland gave up four runs on seven hits over five innings. He walked four and struck out two.

Ethan Roberts entered the game with one out in the bottom of the eighth with the score tied 3-3. He failed to retire a single batter, giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits and a walk.

All four Iowa runs came on a grand slam by catcher Carlos Pérez in the sixth inning. It was Pérez’s 14th home run on the year and his third grand slam already. Pérez was 1 for 4.

Iowa only had two hits in this game. Center fielder Kevin Alcántara went 1 for 3 with a double and a walk.

Knoxville Smokies

The Knoxville Smokies cracked the Biloxi Shuckers (Brewers), 4-3.

Starter Grant Kipp got the win after allowing two runs on three hits over six innings. Kipp walked three and struck out six.

Tyler Santana pitched the final three innings for the save. Santana gave up one run on four hits. He struck out two and walked no one.

Second baseman Pedro Ramirez hit a two-run double in the third inning. He went 1 for 3 with a walk.

Knoxville’s other two runs came on a two-run single in the fifth inning by right fielder Felix Stevens. Stevens was 1 for 4.

Center fielder Jordan Nwogu was 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored.

DH Brett Bateman went 2 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored on Stevens’ single.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were sunk by the Lake County Captains (Guardians), 10-5.

Ryan Gallagher gave up two solo home runs in the second inning and got the loss. Gallagher’s final line was three runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings. Gallagher struck out six and walked one.

South Bend trailed the Captains 4-2 going into the top of the ninth when Grayson Moore got hammered for six runs.

Center fielder Carter Trice hit two home runs tonight, a solo home run in the first inning and a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth. Trice went 3 for 5 with three runs scored. He now has ten home runs this year.

Right fielder Ivan Brethowr was 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans edged the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Astros), 2-1 in ten innings.

Starter Nazier Mulé only lasted 2.2 innings. He gave up one run on two hits. Mulé walked three and struck out five.

Kevin Valdez pitched the next 5.1 innings without allowing a run. Valdez allowed just one hit. He did walk four while striking out four.

Landon Ginn threw the ninth and tenth innings and got the win. Ginn permitted no runs on three hits. He struck out two and walked no one.

Left fielder Eli Lovich singled home the winning run in the bottom of the tenth. He was 1 for 4.

First baseman Matt Halbach went 2 for 4 with a walk.

Catcher Owen Ayers walked four times in a 0 for 1 night. One of the walks was intentional. He scored the first run of the game in the second inning.
