Report: Veteran Blueliner Inks Deal with Chicago Blackhawks

July 1, 2024 by Last Word On Hockey

NHL predictions; Alec Martinez contract

We’ve got more movement on the free agent front this July 1. News came that the Alec Martinez contract was signed by the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday. This news came from TSN insider Bob McKenzie and is reportedly for one season. The dollar amount of the deal has yet to be disclosed.

CHI is looking for more veteran leadership, which is why defenceman Alec Martinez signing there today on a one-year deal will make so much sense.

Alec Martinez Contract Signed by Chicago Blackhawks

Martinez has played for the Los Angeles Kings and the Vegas Golden Knights over his 15-year NHL career. The Rochester Hills, Mich. native totaled four goals and 13 assists for 17 points in 55 games this season. He had a Corsi for of 42.9 and a relative Corsi of -6.5

The soon-to-be 37-year-old has 83 goals and 194 assists for 277 points in 818 career games. Los Angeles originally drafted Martinez in the fourth round, 95th overall of the 2007 NHL Draft.

The three-time Stanley Cup winner has represented his native United States at the international level. Martinez played on Team USA at the 2018 IIHF World Championships in Denmark. He scored one goal and helped the Americans to the bronze medal at the tournament.

What It Means

Chicago is trying to make its way up the standings after a few dreadful seasons. Blackhawks General Manager Kyle Davidson is looking to add more veteran leaders to put around Calder Trophy winner Connor Bedard. Chicago probably isn’t a playoff team, but adding Martinez in the short term is a strong move.

Martinez won’t light up the scoreboard, but he’s a solid defender. He’s nearing the end of his career, but can help provide leadership. Davidson may also be able to spin him for future assets at the trade deadline for a team seeking a veteran blueliner.

The Blackhawks are a couple of seasons away from contending. However, they want to not be drafting so early when the next NHL Draft rolls around in 2025.
