The Chicago Blackhawks have traded winger Alex DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators for the seventh and 39th overall selections in the 2022 Draft, as well as a 2024 third-round pick.

Ottawa Acquires Alex DeBrincat
Alex DeBrincat is a 24-year-old winger who completed his fifth season in the NHL. This season, he scored 41 goals 37 assists for 78 points in 82 games. In 368 games played over his career, he’s scored 160 goals and 147 assists for 307 points. Since coming into the league in the 2017-18 season, he’s tied with Steven Stamkos with the eighth-most goals.
The Blackhawks drafted DeBrincat 39th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft from the Erie Otters of the OHL. In junior, DeBrincat scored 167 goals, and 175 assists for 342 points in 191 games played over three seasons.
The Blackhawks acquired the seventh and 39th overall pick in this year’s draft.
What this Means for the Senators and the Blackhawks
The Ottawa Senators
The Ottawa Senators become much more dangerous with Alex DeBrincat in their line-up. He can slot in with playmaking centre Tim Stützle and create two dangerous lines for the Senators. Brady Tkachuk and Joshua Norris can be one duo with Stützle and DeBrincat as the other. Drake Batherson can slide in wherever the best fit is. Ottawa’s power play can also be quite dangerous with elite shooters in DeBrincat and Norris on one unit.
Chicago Blackhawks
For the Blackhawks, this is another move in their tear-it-down rebuild. While DeBrincat is young at 24, he is two years away from unrestricted free agency. It’s a smart move for the Blackhawks to move him now if they don’t think they can keep him long-term. They receive a first-round pick in a draft in which they didn’t have any.
